Glencoe/River Rescue build

Last year before the '07 season was out, I think it was while we were testing for the Thanksgiving Regatta at Rotory Park in Bullhead the PD asked us if we knew of anyone for towing on the water. I mention one company I knew of. They said that I should think about it. I did over the winter and we desided a few extra bucks couldn't hurt. So we started with a open bow Spectra 20. As we were stripping the boat we found that it had some dry rot. I began removing the damaged wood and removed some more and more and more, you get the picture. We kept trucking along on it in between work. The a Glencoe pops up in the boat spam section. It had a lot of good parts that came with it as well as a pump. So we bought it. It was not quite what we had expected but for the price I was happy with the deal. As we start to check things out on it we find it needs a new floor. No biggy easy enough. So we remover the old 3/4" plywood floor to find it rotted and the keel board broke loose from the boat. OK no biggy, we began removing everything. Then started over. First set of pics are what we bought.

I can't find the demo pics. Here are some as the construction phases got rolling. I believe the glass I used was 7140 in between the keelboard and stringers. As you can see this boat now has a keelboard and 2 stringers. I also installed a rib for extra striegth.

As you can see a 190lbs man can fit into the forward most part of the hull past the rib.

Well being this is a service boat we needed a very durable coating on the floor that bonds well. We chose to use a 2 part epoxy garage floor paint. It covered very well, one coat. The kit we used will cover 250sq' and we used about 99.5% of it.

Now for the engine, it is a .020 Sterling cast piston 460BBF, Some may reconize it when I say the junk yard 460. It has a Crane 272 Power Max camshaft with a Stealth intake and a Edelbrocke 750 carb.

Here is the plan, but where it is white it will be silver metalic, and where it is grey it will be white. I will have a small pin stripe of yellow included somehow. I plan on getting the highly reflective vinyl for the decals on the side. At least that is the plan right now.

The last 2 days have been quite busy as well, we got the silver base coat on finally ! We still have a bit more work ahead of us. The white and red striping then the clear top coat. When all that dries we will be appling the high tech reflective decals.

Well here are some of the pics of prepping for the striping. Being I don't do this normally I figured I better messure everything. I marked the boat with pencile every three feet on the flat sections and in the corners of the bow and transum every foot to six inches. It was very time consuming but I hope it helps the final product.

Well being is is a 20' Cruiser I have to put the classic non scid back on. I asked on the paint section about how some do it, it helped. I have ended up desiding on the 30 grit sand. I found that if I put it on and let it dry, then brush the excess off then spray color over it, it gives me a nice aggresive uniform non scid surface. You can see from the pic I tried four versions before I settled.

As you can see from the picture the boat is fully masked off. I did it so that I can pull tape as I go for the additional colors. It kind of looks as if the boat is wearing a skirt and a slip or something like that.

Well as you can see the first color is on. I am using Torch red.

Now here you can see a silver stripe next to the red, that will be another color. I have to lightly sand the edge from the tape down to have a better finished product. I will be doing this with 600 paper.

Well yesterday we taped off the red striping and knocked the edge down. Then today we sprayed the yellow stripe. Man is it yellow, it was the closest I could come to the Yellow on the Sanger, I love it !

When the yellow was dry enough we taped it off for the sand box.

Well as of 10:30pm all the excess sand has been removed and some white paint has been sprayed !

Today was very busy, we were able to get all the color on. We still have a few touch ups to do but not much. It has been about 20 + years since the last paint job I did. Tomorrow after a few fixes the clearcoat will go on. Then the boat will sit for the next 10 days to cure while we prep the Sanger for the race at Puddingstone on the 28th and 29th of this month. When we get back we will resume the work.

Well today I planned on clearing the boat, but I forgot to prep and paint the swim step. So we spent most of the day doing the swim step. It is all done and ready for clear.

Here are a few pictures from yesterdays work on the swim step.

Well the boat is cleared and swim step is done as well. Like I have mentioned before I am going to be moving the engine in the Sanger forward 1 1/2 in. So all work on the Rescue boat is coming to a screaching halt until after the race at Puddingstone.
